Believe it or not, pizza can be very healthy—these 31 pies certainly prove that, and our nutritionists have tackled all the ways to make any pizza healthier. But if making a fresh pie at home for your valentine doesn't feel special enough, there's a pretty fantastic solution—head to California Pizza Kitchen and get a pizza of your choice shaped into a heart (yes, really!)
Whether it's with your best friends (pizza is perfect for Galentine's Day!) or with your loved one, the team at California Pizza Kitchen knows that the best way to someone's heart is often through their stomach…and their Instagram feed. So they're offering to make any of their pies into a heart-shaped pizza (thin-crust only) totally free of charge, now through Valentine's Day.
Brierley Horton, MS, RD, has previously found ways to find nutritious meals at California Pizza Kitchen; she points out that each pizza is customizable, and that you should feel free to remove some items to add other fresh veggies. "It's a full-on veggie bananza on your plate," Horton says.
California Pizza Kitchen makes its nutrition facts available online—per their site, Horton says the best bet is the roasted artichoke and spinach pizza, which comes topped with fresh artichoke hearts, roasted garlic, sauteed spinach, a blend of mozzarella and parmesan cheese, and a generous layer of CPK's spinach-artichoke sauce. Each slice is 190 calories and contains 390mg of sodium with 7g of fat, so you'll be able to enjoy a couple without derailing your diet.
If you're worried about sodium, try ordering this pie on CPK's cauliflower crust—you'll save 30mg per slice, but you'll up the fat content to 9g. If you choose this option, however, you won't be able to enjoy a heart-shaped pie (sad!).
Whichever pie you choose, know that you can customize your order. Horton says you should look to eliminate extra toppings when possible, which will help cut down calories, sodium, and fat. With the tostada pizza, for example, eliminating tortilla strips from the pie could reduce the 380mg of sodium in each slice.
This Valentine's Day, you can have your heart-shaped pizza—and eat it, too.
