California Theatre: Residential tower proposed

Nine-story downtown movie palace and office tower to be replaced with 40-story, 282-unit residential building

By Roger Showley | 2:20 p.m. April 6, 2016 The California Theatre, which turns 89 this month, looks like it won’t make to 90.

Sloan Capital and Presidio Bay Ventures are seeking city approval to demolish the nine-story downtown San Diego office tower and movie palace at Fourth Avenue and C Street — the theater has been closed for decades — and replace it with “Overture,” a 40-story, 282-unit residential tower. Part of the facade would be replicated as part of the plan by Martinez + Cutri architects.
